I have been producing and directing live television broadcasts for over thirty years, and when I started working in virtual reality I immediately saw the potential for a VR 'version' of live multi-camera broadcasting. What better way to bridge the world of virtual reality to the 'real world' than by broadcasting live VR events out to Twitch or Youtube? And, with the magical affordances of virtual reality, we can push the boundaries of what is possible, transforming the traditional approaches, workflows and design assumptions into a new and innovative chapter of television broadcasting.
Since this field is so emergent, I made this 'behind the scenes' video to help shed some light on how this kind of work gets made and, importantly, why it is so transformational. If you are interested in the intersection of live television and the virtual reality metaverse, this video is for you.
